These photos are from a three-day crossing of Ball Pass on the main divide of the New Zealand Southern Alps, just a few kilometers from Mt Cook/Aoraki.
The Tasman Glacier viewed from Ball Ridge
Looking south down the Tasman Valley to Lake Pukaki
Me on a peak we called 'Peak 2222' because of it's height in meters. This is just above Ball Pass & Mt Cook is in the background.
On the other side of Ball Pass, looking back. We had to traverse the steep snow slopes above those ice cliffs. This was actually the most psychologically challenging part of the trip, because 3 people had lost their lives on this stretch in March 2005 - we had no wish to follow suit.
